IN IT'S THREE SHORT YEARS OF EXISTENCE, DIGITAL CHAMELEON has worked for every major publisher in the industry, on almost every type of publication, and is considered one of the most capable and creative of the new breed of computer art studios currently working in comic books.
Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the company shares a space with its sister company, Image Color Inc., a traditional prepress shop with Hell scanners and a stripping and proofing department. "Being under one roof makes things very convenient if a job requires light table assembly instead of a desktop," says Chuckry.
The four colorists, Lovern Kindzierski, Cathy Smith, George Freeman and Carla Feeney, come from a diverse arts background, making for a very eclectic mix. Feeney brings a background in wildlife painting, while Kindzierski and Freeman were established in the comics industry long before Digital Chameleon came into existence.
This varied combination of talent is clearly one the company's strengths, and one of the reasons they make sure that each of their fifteen painters are artists with art backgrounds, as opposed to computer backgrounds.
"In a comic book you're not working with just one image," says Freeman, "you've got a number of images in a number of pages that make up one story, so consistency and stylization is very important."
To date, the books colored by Digital Chameleon includes: Batman, Trencher, Spectre, Legends Of The Dark Knight, Superpatriot, Fairy Tales Of Oscar Wild, Lobo and others. Their custom-made "Chameleon" font is featured in titles such as Trencher, issues 1-3.
